Nowadays businesses mostly rely on the barcode as they having full and correct information about the product with no fake things in it. Barcodes become necessity for grow and development of any business organization. In today’s era when we go to market we prefer to buy a labeled product as they belong to a legal organization. Barcode contains important and most relevant information about the product including the price, date of manufacturing, date of expiry, brand and quality.

There are two type of barcode used for different business labels

(a) Linear or 1D

(b) 2D

Both are used to complete the demand of the today’s business. Let us discuss what is 1D( Linear) and 2D barcode and how they are differ with each other

LINEAR (1D) BARCODE:

Linear barcode are barcode in which information is stores in form of parallel lines and spacing between them. These lines have variable width which determines the information in the barcode. Data handling capacity of these barcode are less than 85 characters and they are wide in shape. Linear barcodes are Code 128, Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5UPCa, UPCe, EAN8, EAN13 and Databar.

                                              Advantages of Linear barcode

  1. Easier to scan as information is vertically stored.
  2. No distortion on the curved side of a tube
  3. More compatible with older scanners
  4. Highly Compatible with clinical applications

                                              Disadvantages of Linear barcode

  1. High Size as only single dimension is used to encode data, the density of 1D barcodes is dramatically less than 2D barcodes.
  2. Not suited for caps or bottoms of tubes due to lack of area

2D BARCODES:

2D barcode are those barcode in which information is stored in form of dots (.), rectangles, circles, and the entire geometric format. 2D barcodes are having high data handling capacity and can store information in thousand characters. 2D barcodes includes Data Matrix, QR Code, Aztec, PDF417, Maxicode.

Advantages  of 2D Barcode

  1. High density of information is store in it.
  2. Well suited to be attached on the caps and bottoms of tubes
  3. Well suited to be attached on the caps and bottoms of tubes
  4. Error correction allows while reading damaged codes
  5. Availability of rack scanners such as for Matrix or Micronic are there.

                     Disadvantages of 2D Barcode

  1. High-density encoding of information which confuses the user
  2. More difficult to scan the barcode
  3. Not suited for curved surfaces
  4. Fewer compatible scanners are there.
